A harmony rescue at Taman Sri Sentosa

- 7 puppies were rescued with great cooperation from the Residents Community of Taman Sri Sentosa, Old Klang Road

We were at Taman Sri Sentosa visiting a friend’s shop on a usual day. While we were having our lunch at a chinese restaurant, we saw one uncle feeding a pack of rice to a stray dog at the back lane. What caught my heart was when the dog leaned its head on the uncle and licked his hand. The dog was actually showing appreciation to this uncle by its lovable body language.

We were so busy-body enough to approach the uncle and started a conversation with him. This uncle addressed himself as Keong - the president of Taman Sri Sentosa Residents Community, told us this dog has just gave birth to 7 puppies few days ago. He felt sad seeing a mother dog like her straying around. Then he brought us across to the back lane of a vacant shop, pointing at an abandoned cupboard. “She hides all her puppies under the cupboard there.”

The mother dog quickly crawl in to guard her puppies when we were trying to go nearer the cupboard. There are 7 puppies spotted, sleeping soundly with their mother’s companion. According to this kind-hearted man, the residents have been feeding the mother dog for quite some times since she got pregnant.

After we have checked out the puppies, we told Keong about our rescue group and have offered our assistance to rehome the puppies. As these puppies were less than a week’s old when we first met them, our plan was to leave them with their mother until they were old enough to be weaned. The residents agreed with the plan and will continue feeding the mother dog while keeping an eye on the puppies. We have also been keeping contacts with Keong to ensure the puppies are still fine in order.

A couple of weeks passed, we have made another visit to Taman Sri Sentosa when those puppies are ready to be brought back. They have then been sent to vet for vaccination and dewormed. And now, they are at a better place with better care. Thanks to Loon Fatt Enterprise for sponsoring 4 big packs of dog food to House of Happy Furmily. Your generosity is witnessed and it will sure be repaying with lots of joyful days ahead.

Some people might be wondering, how about the mother dog? Although her life has been full of hardship and hunger, she did not trust human easily. Our rescue group has taken many attempts to gain her trust but still we’re unable to go near her to catch her. Therefore, Keong has volunteered to take care of her until our next visit.

These puppies were up for adoption during Pet World Malaysia 2010 but it’s not an easy task to rehome all of them in 3 days time. To all mankind with a heart out there, please help us to spread the news and you’ll be blessed for giving these puppies a home sweet home.

Giving yourself a so-called ‘reason’ to abandon your pet?

-Alright, I do like to grumble but hey, why are we(rescuers) here picking up the mess caused by others selfishness, sacrifice all our private time and labelled ourselves as a volunteered slave who is working round the clock just to serve all our ‘masters’?

I’m sure many of you have seen people putting their pet for adoption with a lot of fantastic excuses. “I’m getting married and I don’t want the dog to disturb our marriage life”, “I’m relocating to overseas and it’s not that convenient to bring along my pet”, “I’m changing a job and I think I can’t spare enough time to care for my pet anymore”, “I’m pregnant and my mother says it’s not good to have pet now”, “My pet just accidently pregnant and keeping all the pups is not in my plan”. Blah... bla.. blah…

HOW COULD YOU?

When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend.

Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" but then you'd relent and roll me over for a belly rub.

My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.

We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs" you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a "dog person", still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy.

Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a prisoner of love."

As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them and their touch not only because your touch was now so infrequent and I would've defended them with my life if need be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you presented a photo of me from your mobile phone and told them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf.

Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers."

You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed, "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life.

You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked "How could you?"

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allowing. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago.

At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you that you had changed your mind, telling myself that this was all a bad dream... or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me.

When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited. I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room – a blessfully quiet room.

She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days.

As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood.

She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago.

She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?"

Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said "I'm so sorry." She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself --a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place.

And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her. It was directed at you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of you. I will think of you and wait for you forever. May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty.

Animal-Testing Centre To Be Set Up In Malaysia

Animal-testing centre to be set up in Malaysia

- A RM450 million deal has been signed between a large Indian biotechnology company and State government-owned Melaka Biotech Holdings Sdn Bhd this year. The State will soon see 3 animal-experimentation laboratories set up in Rembia in Alor Gajah.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Malacca Biotech, Indian Biotechnology firm Vivo BioTech Limited and Vanguard Creative Technologies Sdn Bhd on Jan 21 in India. A joint-venture company, Vivo Bio Tech (M) Sdn Bhd was set up to facilitate this multi billion ringgit project, in which India's Vivo BioTech would hold majority equity, followed by Vanguard Creative and Melaka Biotech.

The MoU was inked in New Delhi by representatives of Vivo BioTech and Vanguard as well as by Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, witnessed by Najib.

But as yet, no notice or application of permit has been made with the Peninsular Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS).

Vivo Bio Tech (Malaysia) director Datuk Kuna Sittampalam stated that the proposed fully integrated biotechnology centre was still in its "early days" as the company has yet to submit building plans to the local council.

He said the company will be importing Beagles from Holland for tests requiring canines, and most probably white mice for the small animal laboratory. He wasn’t sure where they will get the primates from, "Most will be obtained locally, but if we are not allowed, then we will look overseas.

"This is a US$50 billion (RM170 billion) industry and Malaysia wants to be a part of this," said Sittampalam. Not all tests can be replicated using human tissue culture in place of animals, he said, and explained that animal-testing is a small segment of the whole biotechnology process and people must look at the "bigger picture".

Animal testing helps in making safe products before launched for human consumption

No animals should suffer for the sake of vanity and they have the equal right to live as human beings

Animal testing is the use of animals in scientific experiments by universities, pharmaceutical companies and medical schools. Most animals used for research are breed for the specific purpose of testing and some animals used for testing are captured from the wild. Some animal testing is done for basic research such as behaviour studies and genetics while other major animal testing is done for the benefit of humans. This research includes drug testing, surgical procedures, medical equipments, and somewhat inconsequential applications like; cosmetics, and other household products. Most animals that are used for researched are euthanized once the experiment is finished.

In certain countries, the law specifies that a new drug should essentially be tested on at least two different species of live mammal, one of which must be a large non-rodent. Even though the some Animals Act specifies that there should be no animal experiments conducted if there is a realistic alternative and yet, almost every medication in the market has been tested on animals.

Those who support animal testing point out all the amazing breakthroughs that have already come from animal testing research such as organ transplant and open-heart surgery techniques; life saving drugs; effective insulin and cancer treatments; and vaccines for deadly diseases like polio, rabies, rubella, and tuberculosis. Animal testing also benefits the lives of animals such as the heartworm medicine that has saved many dogs lives.

The basic argument from the animal rights activists is that under the disguise of these tests the animals are genetically modified, force-fed with harmful chemicals, blinded, scalded and are mimed. This is nothing but animal abuse or animal cruelty. They also propose that alternatives available to animal experimentation such as chemical assay tests, tissue, cell and organ culture systems, cloned human skin cells and patches, computer and mathematical models be employed, which they think, will produce more effective results as that of animal testing.

Research reveals that only 5 to 25% of the animal tests and human results are agreeable! Most of the drugs passed by animal tests are now discarded as useless to humans. The conditions under which the animals are subjected to human experimentation have caused tumours in rodents, while the animal test results were declared to be of little relevance for humans. The only explanation being offered for this declaration is the fact that there are anatomical and physiological differences between animals and humans. It is important to note that although animals are almost always used in cancer research, they never get the human form of cancer which affects membranes like the lungs. Most medical experts agree that data from animal tests cannot be extrapolated safely to human patients.

Somehow, it is pretty much impossible to ‘untest’ a particular drug. Animal testing will continue to confuse all issues although there is no basic connection between animal testing and the human health. The general belief in the goodness of animal testing is basically the result of brainwashing that the general public has been subjected to for a long, long time. Behind these torturous practices are the pharmaceutical companies that spend billions of dollars on financing and publicizing the research universities and institutes.

We, whom categorized ourselves as human, are systematically cutting down the last forest that provides their shelter to farm cattle; dump toxic chemicals and sewage into the waters in which they live; wear the fur of the last few of their species on our bodies, and now pour cosmetic products into their rectums to determine the harmful effects they might cause on humans.

Veterinary Services Department (DVS) deputy director general Dr Ahmad Suhaimi Omar made the suggestion at a forum on effective animal pound management organised by the Petaling Jaya City Council’s Canine Advisory Team last week, that stray dogs held at pounds be sold for human consumption — as a method of stray management.

For those who are unaware of this, stray dogs that captured are now only kept for seven days at local pounds and will then be humanely euthanised(put to sleep) if the dogs remained unclaimed after the week.

With this ‘win-win’ suggestion to solve the increasing number of stray dogs captured – sell it off for human consumption, Dr Ahmad argued that "In principle, most religions would basically allow the slaughter if the slaughter of an animal is for the purpose of consumption."

Here are some thoughtful quotes made by Dr Ahmad:-

“Do we have to keep the dogs at the pounds forever? They are animals, just like chickens or goats.”

"Once the dog is caught and nobody claims it, what do you suggest we do? If people want to consume (dogs), why not let them?”

"We should not impose our values onto others. If you cannot eat dog meat, you cannot stop one from taking it. Like pork, for example. I cannot eat it but I cannot stop you from eating it.

"This is how we have been able to live harmoniously in Malaysia. We have to be open. It is an individual decision, if others want to eat it, it is up to them."

Such statement made by Dr Ahmad is making me furious.

A slight silly thought crossed my mind, “Does this mean we should just slaughter human for food because there are too many inmates in the jails?”

Dog Meat Trade

(I struggled for quite sometimes to write about this because I could not even look at the pictures when I found these infos)

Dog meat is eaten in some countries like Thailand, Vietnam, China and South Korea. Certain breeds of dogs are raised on farms and butchered for their meat. Dog meat may be consumed as an alternative source of meat. Almost all dogs that are used for meat are imported from Southeast Asian countries and from dog robbers.

Within Thailand, this no-stoplight town known as Ta Rae, is regionally known as a nerve center in Southeast Asia's stray dog meat trade. For decades, enterprising Thais have grown wealthy gathering society’s canine pests by the tens of thousands and selling them to Vietnamese and Laos distributors for about $10 per head. (Such a lucrative business huh?) Reported source says that there are at least 17 dog slaughter houses and 300 people involved in dog meat trading in Ta Rae, which exports up to 4,000 kilograms (8,800 pounds) of dog meat across the country every day, smuggled through river borders illegally each month. In a region where many turn to the rice paddies for work, dog meat trading is a tempting alternative.

Vietnam - where demand for roasted dog sells for triple the price of pork. Dog Meat or thit cho is a specialty in the North of Vietnam arisen from famines during the many years of war in the country. Since the wars, eating dog meat has remained popular and has now become part of the culture, a special tradition in the lives of the Vietnamese people. In Hanoi, the chances of ordering dog meat in when eating out in a Vietnamese restaurant and receiving dog meat are about as likely as ordering a hamburger at McDonalds here. Eating dog meat is to be believed as a male bonding exercise in Vietnam. Groups of customers, usually male, seated on mats, will spend their evenings sharing plates of dog meat and drinking alcohol. In 2009, dog meat was found to be a main carrier of the Vibrio cholerae bacterium, which caused the summer epidemic of cholera in northern Vietnam.

The consumption of dog meat in Korean, in South Korea has a long history as with some other Eastern Asian cultures. Korean people had mostly depended on crops for diet for millennia, not raising many pigs, chickens, or any other meat animals. Cattle had been valuable as working animals for farming. Therefore, Koreans had had limited sources of animal protein, and the most affordable and available animal meats usually had come from dogs. Dog meat has now been categorized as 'repugnant food' under a regulation issued by Seoul Metropolitan Government. However, selling dog meat is almost legal in South Korea as the laws are not strictly enforced and some portions of South Korean population still consume dog meat. With over 6,000 restaurants in Korea serving up about 1 million dogs a year, it would seem to be a difficult task indeed to stop the Koreans from eating dogs. Dog meat is often consumed during the summer months and is either roasted or prepared in soups or stews. The most popular of these soups is Gaejang-guk, a spicy stew meant to balance the body's heat during the summer months. This is thought to ensure good health by balancing one's "ki" or vital energy of the body.

Recent evidence shows that the market is expanding with the growth of the dog meat and breeding industry in China. Dog farms are currently springing up all over China, with industry ads boasting high rates of return, three times as profitable as poultry, and four times as profitable as raising pigs. Chinese dog farmers believe that in a few short years, dog farms will become as prolific as those raising sheep and cattle. In Peixian for example, 300,000 dogs are slaughtered annually. Some farms raise as many as 100,000 dogs a year, most for slaughter but some also for their fur. The animals are killed at about 6 months of age. The eating of dog meat in China dates back thousands of years from at least around 500 BC, and possibly even before. Dog meat - known as "fragrant meat" has long been thought by some to have medicinal properties, and is especially popular in winter months as it is believed to generate heat and promote bodily warmth. During the 2008 Olympic Beijing, officials ordered dog meat off the menus at local markets to avoid upsetting international visitors.

“I can buy more than 1 new puppy with that amount of money, why bother paying for that sick dog’s medical fees?”

That kind of thinking is sick and insane, mind my language.

Will you push your family members like your mother/father to a shelter or even put them to sleep when you think of their medical bills?

But sadly to say, there are some people with such thinking in this wonderful world.

THE RESCUERS' RAINBOW BRIDGE

Someone asked me this question before, "Are you afraid of death?"

I shaked my head and told her “No”

“Why?” My friend asked again.

I smiled and answered her, “I’m sure I’m not the perfect one nor any great people who can reserve a space in Heaven, but, one thing I’m very sure is when the day I die, I can meet back all the animals that I rescued/ helped before at the rainbow bridge.”

What is a rainbow bridge?
When an animal dies, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

And then i told my friend, “Even I’ve been choosen to go to hell, I’m not afraid as all my special ones will appeal to God for letting me go to a better place. But even the appeal failed, still it’s ok because, they will be loyal enough to follow wherever I go. I will not be alone there.”

Here I wan to share another story copied from a friend’s note
- The Rescuers’ Rainbow Bridge

Unlike most days on Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and had started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.

It wasn’t long before an elderly dog came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. the other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often.

He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this dog had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked towards, The Bridge he watched all the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel, who apologised but told the broken-spirited old dog that he would not be able to pass. Only animals who were with their humans could pass over Rainbow Bridge.

With nobody and no place else to turn to, the elderly dog turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm as well as sad and discouraged. They weren’t playing but simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting.

One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge, a dog, did not understand what he had just witnessed and asked another dog that had been there for a while to explain the situation to him.

“You see, that old dog was a rescue. He was rescued looking like how you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never found a family after being rescued and passed on with only the love shown by his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family that had given him love, he has no one to escort him over The Bridge.”

The dog thought about this for a moment and then asked - “So what will happen now?”As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom disappeared.

A single person was seen approaching The Bridge and the whole group of destitute animals waiting outside the pathway to The Bridge were suddenly bathed in a golden light. They all became young and healthy and in the prime of their lives again.

“Watch and see,” said the second animal. Another group of animals who were waiting within the pathway to The Bridge also approached the person and bowed low as she appeared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat or a scratch behind the ears. The destitute animals, who had been waiting outside the pathway to The Bridge, followed the person to The Bridge. Once there they all crossed The Rainbow Bridge together.

“What happened?”

“That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of her efforts. They will cross when their humans arrive. Minnie just passed away this afternoon.

I'm very sad to lost such a sweetie like her. Although many efforts were put in to keep her longer with us, but too bad, she can't make it thru this time.

Sorry, I can hardly dig out any better words to make this paragraph complete as I need some time to mount for our lovable Minnie.

Rest In Peace Minnie. We'll meet again at the Bridge.

Minnie - the Great Tumor Fighter

Today, we have a new resident in the house named Minnie. She is a 8 years old purebred female miniature pinscher.

Minnie was surrendered by her owner to PAWS. She has a tumour in her mammary glands and is not expected to live very much longer (the shelter manager thinks she only has few months to 1 year left). Minnie also has a cataract in one eye but she is too old and is not recommended for any surgery.

PAWS' manager, Edward, does not want to put Minnie down as she may not have much longer to live. And since she has been a pet before, PAWS was appealing for a fosterer to take her in and give her the tender loving care that she needs until the end of her days. We were informed about this and decided to bring back this lovable dog.

Minnie is such a sweetie as she loves being cuddled. She get excited when i called her name and starts to lick my hand with her cute little tongue. Despite her sickness, she is just another active happy-go-lucky fella who is making her way on without a 'giving up' face.

Dear friends, let's pray for Minnie no matter what religion you are and may her blessed with a longer happy life.

Updates on Event: Cutie Pet Fair

Sorry for such a long delay for the event's update as i'm total wear out due to the busy daily chores to take care of our special ones in the house.

Cutie Pet Fair (21-22 Nov 2009 @ Central Park Bandar Utama)

Thanks to Think Event Management & Petster Network for organising such a great event with their objective in helping the misfortune pets. Other than the normal sales activities held at the merchants' booths, there are also some fun game booths and the most heartful part - a designated section for all the pet charity organisations.

Although the venue was pityful muddy due to the heavy rain poured on the day before, but it's seems that our pet lovers wasn't too hesitate when showing their helping hands to us. As reported, exeactly 30 animals have been rehomed during this 2-day event. That's really a good news, isn't it?

There are these generous merchants like US Regal and I-pet who sponsored dog food, beautiful collars and clothings for all the pet charity shelters and yea, we've got 2 big packs of dog food for House of Happy Furmily. ^^

As for our booth, we were raising fund for April's & Malcolm's medical expenses through our campaign named 'Lighting Up a HOPE'. Everyone can just light up a candle at our booth by giving a blessing hope to all this special pets with only RM1 and they got a cute pocket calendar sponsored by House of Groomers in return.

Many great people joined in the campaign but most of them were too lovely which they actually paid more than what was requested. Some paid RM2, some paid RM5, some even paid RM20! It's so overwhelming until our calendars were all given out before the event ends!

I like to show my sincere appreciation to all these blessed people listed below. You were not only lighted up a candle in the event, u lighted up the HOPE for all these special pets in our house.

During the event, we met a little girl who visited our booth with her parents. After she had heard about the stories of our special pets, without a moment of hesitation, she asked a RM5 from her mummy.

Then the mummy said to her in Mandarin, "You can only spend a maximum of RM5 for the event today, so do you really want to spend it here(at our booth) or you prefer to save it to buy a cute toy for our Benji?"(Benji is their beagle puppy)

And this little girl answered her mummy, "Even without a new toy, Benji is already very happy with us being with him and treated as our family members while all these misfortune pets suffering there without even a chance of happiness. I rather give my RM5 to them so that they can deserve better treatments and at least a chance of happiness."

I'm was personally impressed by her words. Girl, you will sure be somebody in the future with your good deeds. God bless all the good people.

RIP Lou Yeh

Lou Yeh has just passed away early this morning.

He was in fever last few days due to the bad infection nearby his anal. According to vet, the infection might caused by the long time dragging on the floor when he was still a stray. Although we have fed him medication but he was too weak to recover because of the terrible complication happening inside his half-paralysed body.

Still, i never feel regret for the medical expenses spent on Lou Yeh eventhough he sort of wasted it somehow. At least we both have tried our best to share our love with each other and we were holding hands together during his very last journey of life.

Lou Yeh, thanks for your lovely kisses and i shall never forget how you tried to called me using your gentle voice.

We'll meet again one day when my time has come. Please do play and eat as hard as you could while you waiting at the other side of rainbow bridge.

I’ve just adopted another handicaped dog from a penang shelter. This dog was abandoned by the owner and was left unattended at the door of this shelter's place. He is half body paralysed where the whole bottom part of his body is not really responding. He can only lie down or sit by leaning on wall looking at you with his pityful eyes. I cannot stop my mind, lose my rationale, and yea, he is with me now.

It’s not an easy job at all to take of of him. He can only lie there without any better movement, he need to be fed for food n drink, he need to be cleaned few times everyday as he get dirty everytime when he poo/pee. He is just like an old man sitting on a lazy chair waiting for people to serve him. oh ya, I’ve named him ‘lou yeh’(老爷) for that. And, i’m the servant for sure. :)

Then a fren of mine asked, why not you put it to sleep? Why you wan to let him continue the miserable life and making your life harder at the same time?

Haha… If i can do this, i think i’m not Shayne anymore. I won’t do this, not under any circumstances.

Even he is not feeling well, but he doesn’t show me he is giving up in any way. He still tried to struggle for its life when i put him into a tub(when i was cleaning him). He still tried hard to sit with its back leaning on the wall although he hardly got the energy to push his heavy body up. He even tried to lift up his head just to move his mouth nearer just to give me a lovely kiss.

I guess this is a good time for me to learn how to be stronger n tougher again!

House of Happy Furmily是一个宠物基金会，我的姐姐Shayne Lee是创办人，我负责协助她创办这个基金会。我很高兴这个基金会现在终于成立了！

其实我和我姐姐Shayne Lee都是很爱宠物的人，我们家养了很多很多小动物。我们家的宠物都是领养回来的，它们都是些被人抛弃，或是身体有缺陷的动物。我们一开始只是觉得它们很可怜，所以就把它们都收养回来了。渐渐地，我们对它们的感情越来越深，它们就像是我们的家庭成员一样。

至于为什么会想要成立一个这样的基金会呢？我们是自从我们的其中一个领养回来的小狗Columbus去世之后，才突然有这个念头的。相信有看我部落格的朋友都知道，Columbus是一只Yorkshire Terrier，他天生就盲了，因为眼球没有完整地发育完。此外，他的血也是有问题，兽医都说他活不了多久。可是很幸运的，在我们细心照料下，他健康快乐地活下去了。无奈，残酷的这一天还是来了，4.30pm 27 Aug 2009他去世了，安乐地去世了。虽然我和我的姐姐感到十分地伤心，可是想到他是安乐地去世，我们也该感到欣慰才对。

Columbus的离开让我们领悟到一个道理，只靠我们两姐妹单薄的力量是无法帮助更多有缺陷的小动物们。于是，在我们的商量之下，终于决定了成立这个宠物基金会！我们希望通过这个基金会，可认识全世界更多的爱护小动物的同志们，一起帮助更多的小动物。希望大家可以有钱出钱，有力出力，一起帮助这群需要我们的小动物们！

Malcolm - the rock statue in an alley

Malcolm is a stray cat that we found in an alley behind the shoplots. His whole body is full of mange* and this make him looks like a rock statue covered with poured cements. He looks extremely dehydrated and was very weak, he can't even spare the energy to struggle when we caught him.

Other than the skin disease, lab results show that the cat has internal complications which cannot be identified unless he is given further body scans which would cause us a bomb(estimating more than 3k). As for our budget constraint, we have first treated his skin problem.

Malcolm is getting better from day to day but he is very protective to himself maybe due to the bad days he had when he was still a stray. We had a hard time when bathing him and got bitten by him a few times. We are in the progress of taming it for the time being.

We are still taking care of him while appealing for sufficient funding now.

*Mange is a highly contagious condition of the skin caused by mites and parasites in animals. Cats affected by mange most often stay outdoors. If left untreated, the cat may become very ill and lose its fur. The symptoms of mange include itching, discomfort, and scratching.

April – the lovable mother

April, a long-coat Chihuahua, who has major heart problems. She is 5 years old now but according to vets, she looks more like a 8 years old dog with its appearance and health condition.

April used to be a breeding dog. She faced difficulties in delivering which almost lost her life during the last pregnancy. Hence the breeder is kind enough to let her go to new home with better attention and hopefully more love. Sadly she wasn't doing good at the previous adopter's place hence has been returned. We have then found out her heart problem and she is with us now.

Despite the high medical fees to support April, we still took her in and provided her with all the help we can offer. April is given her daily medicine which helps her heart to pump at a normal pace. Other than this, due to her weaken body, April tends to fall sick easily and it's quite a tough job for her to get recover everytime.

As for now, all we can do is just to keep April alives as long as we could and of cause with granted happiness and tonnes of LOVEsss.

Coco – the Gremlin-look-alike Peke

Coco is Pekingese with dry-eye problem (Keratoconjunctivitis sicca*). According to vet's, with Coco’s eye condition, she might be blind in the future due to aging.

Coco is a super hungry-ghost dog who loves food to the bits. She will bark as loud as she could and to do a lot of funny tricks just to beg for food. Because of her fluffy double-coat, Coco looks a bit fat for her size and has often been called “Fei Poh” as nickname.

Coco is a funny dog who snores while sleeping, and believe it or not, it’s really sound like an old man snoring. Coco enjoys playing fetch and she like to run the whole house when she gets exciting.

*Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is the technical term for a condition also known as 'dry eye.' Inadequate tear production is the cause. This may be due to injuries to the tear glands, such as infections or trauma. The nerves of these glands may also become damaged.

Almond - the Pulau Ketam rescued puppy

On the 27th June 2009, we have volunteered to join the Pulau Ketam Rescue Mission. A group of puppies were found whining in an abandoned factory. Without a moment’s hesitation, we brought the 12 stray puppies back to KL. These puppies were then dewormed and rehomed.

Almond was earlier rehomed to a young guy who looks sincere enough to promise a happiness life to her. But, a few days later, Shayne got a call which this adopter has given up to keep Almond due to some personal reason. Shayne decided to take back the puppy and give Almond a home sweet home.

Almond is a very loving girl. She likes being hugged and she will lick Shayne’s mouth non-stop to show her love towards the owner.

She pick-up basic commands in a week’s time, that’s considered obedience enough as a house dog.

Almost a year back, we adopted a Yorkshire Terrier, Columbus, who was blind from birth.

Columbus relies on his hearing and smelling senses to find his way around. Adopting Columbus was not an easy job at all because other than being blind, he has other internal complications as well. His blood test results is terrible since puppyhood - either it is far above average OR far below average. Most vets said that Columbus would only be alive for another 1 or 2 months.

However, miraculously, Columbus is still jumping around despite the vet’s predictions based on the test results. He is always in a good mood, LOVESssSSSsss to greet people daily, jumping here and there, barking here and there.

But still the day has come for Columbus, he has passed away 4.30pm, 27 Aug 2009. He was seems ok few days before until he was found sleeping without breathing sign at his room. We rush him to the vet but too bad, he's gone by then.

I have 7 adopted dogs and 1 rescued cat staying with me under the same roof. Most of them are either abandoned by the previous owners, with critical health condition, untamed or untrained. Even they are with such disadvantage, i doesn’t see them showing me their “giving up” face. They are still trying their very best to live a happy life, eat and play as hard as they could. It is a joy to have them around. Seeing them brings tear to my eyes because these are the true example of being grateful and happy for what you have despite your shortcomings.

I’m personally touched by their strong surviving spirits. Together with my friends; we are a group of pet enthusiasts who believe that helping pets is a necessity because pets have feelings like we do. If you abandon your dogs, they will be feeling the same way you would feel if someone abandoned you when you get sick.

Therefore, we have decided to develop a charity fund catered especially for handicapped pets or those in dire needs of medical attention even those who are advised to “put-to-sleep” by certain vets, in other words, special pets. With this charity fund, there would not be any more cases of owners not being able to treat their pets because of financial constraints.

We want to help as many as we could! All our team mates behind this charity fund have a true heart to help these special pets. We want to be the ones that these special pets can turn to when there seems to be hopeless in their owners’ eyes.

Please support the House of Happy Furmily and be a blessing to those special pets. Let’s give them a hope and a chance to live a longer and happier life.
